Reasons Why You Have Bleeding Gums

If your gums bleed when you brush or floss your teeth it could mean that you have been brushing and flossing to hard. We recommend that you use a soft bristled toothbrush for this reason. If your using a hard-bristled toothbrush and you are brushing vigorously it can cause bleeding gums. If your gums are bleeding constantly, you shouldn’t ignore it. Bleeding gums can happen for many reasons like, gingivitis or a sign of pregnancy. If you have recently changed your oral routine that can also make your gums bleed. Here are a few things that you can do if you have bleeding gums.

·        Improve your oral care. One of the biggest causes of bleeding gums is plague buildup around the gum line. If the plaque doesn’t get removed it hardens into tartar, which is a calcified material that plaque continues to irritate your gums and that can cause them to bleed and can lead to a higher form of gum disease. The best thing that you can do is to make sure you are brushing and flossing twice a day and come into the office for regular checkups.

·        If you are doing your regular oral hygiene and keeping up with us at the office then it could be your dental tools that is causing the bleeding gums. You may think that using a hard-bristled toothbrush and brushing harder with it will clean more, but in fact it can hurt your teeth. Using a hard-bristled toothbrush can damage the enamel on your teeth and irritate your gums. That’s why it’s always best to use a soft bristled toothbrush.

·        Watch what you eat. Foods that contain a lot of sugar can increase your risk for gum disease because sugar creates an ideal environment for plaque to build up. Be sure to commit to a diet that has less sugar and high in vitamins like fruits and vegetables.
